The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday rejected claims by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed that he is being targeted for political reasons, insisting its investigation has nothing to do with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The agency said its actions follow the law and are free from outside influence.
The EFCC responded after the governor accused federal authorities and Wike of using security agencies to harass him and his aides. He made the allegation during a television interview, describing the probe as a political attack meant to weaken him.

The anti-graft agency said it is independent and does not answer to any politician. It dismissed the claims as false, adding that no individual has the power to direct its operations or determine who it investigates.
The Commission said it was wrong for the governor to link its work in Bauchi to Wike. It noted that Mohammed had faced corruption charges even before becoming governor, and that the case only paused because of the immunity attached to his office.

On the charges involving some Bauchi officials, the EFCC said the matter is already before the court and based on evidence gathered during investigations. It urged the public to review court filings to judge the case on facts, not claims of victimisation.
The agency also dismissed suggestions that the probe was tied to terrorism financing politics, calling it a distraction. It advised the governor to focus on running the state while the Commission continues its duty of tackling financial crimes across the country.
