The defection of former Anambra State governor Peter Obi to the African Democratic Congress has triggered a sharp political exchange, with allies of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar saying the Presidency is unsettled ahead of the 2027 elections.

The reaction came after comments credited to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, which Atiku’s media aide, Phrank Shaibu, described as unusually aggressive for an official voice of government.

The issue centres on Obi’s move to the ADC and growing talks of an opposition alliance. Shaibu said the response from Aso Rock showed unease, not strength, and suggested the ruling camp feels threatened by fresh political alignments.
According to him, dismissing Obi’s move while defending an administration built on defections exposed double standards. He also argued that public anger over the 2023 elections remains real and cannot be brushed aside as bitterness.

Shaibu further linked the tension to wider public frustration, saying government communication has shifted from persuasion to insults because many Nigerians are struggling with hardship, insecurity, and declining living standards.
He insisted the debate is less about Obi as an individual and more about fear of 2027, adding that Nigerians, not government spokesmen, will ultimately decide the country’s political future at the polls.
