Labour Party Calls Obi 2023 Ticket Costly Mistake

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party says giving Peter Obi the party’s 2023 presidential ticket turned out to be a wrong political move that damaged the party and fueled internal conflict.

The faction, speaking through its publicity secretary Obiora Ifoh, said Obi’s recent exit marked a clean break from a crisis that had dragged on for months. According to the group, the party had already distanced itself from Obi and some of his supporters since September 2024 over repeated disagreements.
The leadership accused Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti of backing actions that weakened party unity and challenged its authority. It said their conduct created divisions and made it hard for the party to function as one body.
The faction also questioned why Governor Otti remained in the party despite his suspension, urging him to follow Obi’s political path and leave fully. It described this as necessary for peace and clarity within the party.

Commenting on Obi’s defection event in Enugu, the group claimed the rally lacked strong backing from key political figures and traditional leaders in the South-East, which it said showed a drop in his influence in the region.
The party blamed Obi’s 2023 presidential run for what it described as reduced political benefits for the South-East under the current government. It admitted backing him was a poor choice and said it was now rebuilding to offer Nigerians a stronger and more united option in future elections.
