Former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello has announced his plan to run for the Kogi Central Senate seat in the 2027 general elections, even as he faces an ongoing fraud case.

The declaration came at a time when his political future and legal troubles are both under public attention.
The announcement was made on Monday during a visit to the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, where Bello met with traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders from the district. The event was later shared online through his official social media page.

Bello, who governed Kogi State from 2016 to 2024 under the APC, said he accepted calls from supporters to represent Kogi Central at the National Assembly. The gathering was attended by Governor Usman Ododo and other party figures who openly backed his ambition.
The development comes while Bello is standing trial before a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja. The EFCC is prosecuting him over alleged N80 billion money laundering and fraud linked to his time as governor, with the case expected to continue into 2026.

Prosecutors have presented bank officials who testified about large withdrawals and disputed transactions from state accounts during Bello’s tenure. Bello has denied all allegations and maintains that the charges against him are false.
His entry into the race sets up a likely contest with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the current holder of the Kogi Central seat. The senator, who won the position in 2023, has also faced legal issues in the past, keeping the contest firmly in the national spotlight.
