NAFDAC Warns That Fake Kiss Condoms Hit Nigerian Markets

Fake Kiss condoms are spreading across major Nigerian cities, prompting NAFDAC to issue a public warning on Monday after receiving reports from DKT International Nigeria, an organisation involved in family planning and HIV prevention.

The warning affects consumers nationwide, especially buyers in busy markets where the counterfeit products have been openly sold as genuine protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
The fake condoms have been traced to Onitsha Market, Idumota and Trade Fair markets in Lagos, as well as markets in Abuja, Kano, Uyo, Gombe and Enugu, raising concern about how widely they have circulated.
NAFDAC said the issue surfaced after checks showed that the products being sold did not meet approved safety and quality standards required for medical devices meant for personal health protection.

According to the agency, the fake condoms are dangerous because they are poorly made, more likely to tear, cause skin reactions, spread infections and give users a false sense of safety. Many come with bad packaging, missing details, thinner latex and little lubrication.
To contain the problem, NAFDAC has directed its offices across the country to step up inspections and remove the fake products from shelves. The agency also urged Nigerians to buy health products only from approved sellers and report any suspicious items through its official channels.
