Ogun 2027: PDP Chieftain Denies Governorship Ambition

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Topa Olusegun Peter, has denied reports identifying him as a governorship aspirant for the 2027 election, alleging that his name was used without his consent.

Peter, the Baale of Olorunsogo, Ilara, in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area, made the clarification while speaking to journalists in Abeokuta on Saturday.

He alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in the local government area, Ramoni Adebolu, and some other APC leaders had approached him with a political proposal before his name appeared in newspaper reports as a PDP governorship aspirant.

Peter insisted that he had neither purchased a governorship nomination form nor signed any document expressing an intention to contest the election. He also denied permitting anyone to represent him in connection with the reported ambition.

According to him, the matter began when Adebolu and other politicians visited him in his hometown of Ilara and told him they had a political position to offer him under the PDP. He said he rejected the proposal because he was not interested in the arrangement.

Peter explained that although the visitors mentioned the PDP, they did not clearly state the nature of the position being offered. He maintained that any political opportunity he considered would have to come through his own party.

He further alleged that after his name appeared in newspaper publications, he contacted Adebolu to seek an explanation.

Peter claimed that the APC chairman advised him to remain calm and promised him financial benefits, a car and a major political appointment if Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, emerged as the APC’s governorship candidate.

The PDP chieftain, however, stressed that he did not receive money from Adebolu or any of the other individuals he mentioned.

Peter also raised concerns over a purported petition allegedly sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by a lawyer, Anderson Asemota of Neplus Ultra Attorneys, requesting that the commission publish his client’s name as a governorship aspirant within 48 hours.

He denied knowing the lawyer or authorising him to submit any correspondence to INEC on his behalf.

Peter said he had never met or spoken with Asemota, adding that he was unaware of any instruction given to the lawyer to act in his name.

He called on INEC to investigate the reported correspondence and determine how his name was allegedly used without his knowledge.

The PDP chieftain also urged the commission to disregard any document purportedly submitted by him or on his behalf until the circumstances surrounding the matter had been established.

Peter further appealed to security agencies and other relevant authorities to ensure the safety of himself and his family, saying the controversy had caused him serious concern. Although he did not identify any specific threat, he called for a proper investigation and the prosecution of anyone found responsible for wrongdoing.

Reaffirming his allegiance to the PDP, Peter said he had been a member of the party since its formation in 1998 and had never defected to another political platform.

He also maintained that Hon. Ladi Adebutu emerged as the PDP’s sole governorship candidate during the party’s primary election in Ogun State on May 24, 2026. Peter said he supervised the exercise in his ward, adding that this made it necessary to clarify why he had subsequently been identified as another governorship aspirant.

The allegations against Adebolu and the other individuals named by Peter had not been independently established in the report.
