The Federal Government has announced public holidays to allow Nigerians celebrate Christmas and usher in the New Year.

December 25 and 26 have been set aside for Christmas Day and Boxing Day, while January 1, 2026, will mark the New Year holiday.

Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, through an official statement released in Abuja and signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
The holidays are part of the government’s yearly calendar to recognise major religious and national celebrations and give citizens time to rest, reflect and celebrate with family and loved ones.
According to the minister, the Christmas season offers an opportunity for Nigerians to think about values linked to the birth of Jesus Christ, such as love, peace, humility and sacrifice, which he said remain vital for national unity.

The minister further advised citizens to celebrate responsibly, obey the law and remain security conscious throughout the holidays, while wishing Nigerians a joyful Christmas and a successful New Year.
