The backing came from Musa Illiyasu Kwankwaso, a former local government chairman in Kano State, who welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s order directing governors to release council funds directly to local governments.

He spoke in Kano on Monday in a personally signed statement while reacting to the president’s decision to enforce financial autonomy for councils through an executive order.
Kwankwaso said the directive targets grassroots development and is meant to improve the lives of ordinary people who depend on local governments for basic services.
He explained that direct access to funds would allow councils to handle projects such as schools, hospitals and community security without interference from state governments.

Drawing from experience, he recalled serving as Madobi Local Government chairman two decades ago, when far smaller monthly allocations were enough to pay salaries and deliver lasting projects.
He added that councils now receive far larger sums, yet progress remains limited because funds are controlled at the state level, stressing that full autonomy follows a Supreme Court ruling and reflects respect for the rule of law.
