The Delta State Government has said it will back the creation of Anioma State only if the process follows the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

The position was made known on Monday in Asaba when youths from the nine local government areas of Delta North staged a peaceful march to the Government House to renew their demand for Anioma State and its inclusion in the South East zone.

Speaking on behalf of the state government, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Prince Johnson Erijo, said the demand was valid and deserved attention, noting that the Oborevwori administration has no objection to the aspirations of the Anioma people.

He explained that the government supports democratic choice and the rule of law, adding that unity among Anioma communities is key if the agitation is to succeed and avoid internal disagreements.
Erijo outlined that state creation requires petitions to the National Assembly, legislative reviews and a referendum across all Anioma-speaking areas, including Aniocha, Oshimili, Ika, Ndokwa councils and interested neighbouring communities.
He assured the protesters that once a referendum is conducted and the majority of the people support the new state, the Delta State Government will respect and support the outcome.
The protesting youths, drawn from various Anioma communities, insisted that the new state is long overdue, urged the state government to give moral and political backing, and called on President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to approve the request in line with the law.
