The decision affects major routes around the 33 axis, Nkisi Road, and Nkwelle Road, where residents and commuters often spend several hours in traffic, slowing business and daily movement.

Soludo said the situation has become unbearable for people who rely on the roads for work, trade, and transport, making traffic relief a priority for his administration.

The road projects are part of a wider plan to open up the 33 area and connect it better to surrounding routes, with the aim of improving movement and reshaping the city’s layout.

Construction work is expected to begin early next year after assessments carried out by the state government to ensure proper design and smooth execution of the projects.

When completed, the expanded roads are expected to cut travel time, reduce traffic buildup, support economic activity, and improve the overall look and flow of Onitsha.
