Niger Governor Welcomes Freed Catholic Schoolchildren

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago on Monday received 100 pupils of St Mary’s Catholic private primary and secondary school who were released after nearly two weeks in captivity.

The children, taken from their school in Papiri in Munya Local Government Area on November 21, regained their freedom on Sunday.

They arrived at the government house in Minna around 5:20 p.m., transported in several buses and escorted by heavy security. Families, senior officials, and rescue teams joined the governor to welcome the pupils back.

The state government is expected to brief the public on their welfare and the next steps as the children begin their recovery.
