The claim surfaced online this week, prompting Emefiele to issue a firm response through a statement circulated by his media team.

He said the allegation was false and created to damage his name at a time when he is already facing public scrutiny over past actions in office.

Emefiele noted that the report did not come from any official security agency and insisted that those behind it were pushing a smear campaign.
