Lawmakers Call For Kanu Release And Political Talks

Forty-four federal lawmakers have written to President Bola Tinubu calling for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The lawmakers say his detention has deepened unrest in the South-East and urged the president to act using his constitutional powers.

The letter, signed by members from various regions, stressed the need for a political solution to challenges in the South-East. Lawmakers asked the president to convene a roundtable involving all parties to seek lasting reconciliation and peace.

They specifically requested that the Attorney-General discontinue Kanu’s prosecution, pointing to legal issues in his detention, including questions about his rendition from Kenya. The lawmakers argued that ending the trial could help stabilize the region.

The group also noted that ongoing insecurity in the South-East, which has worsened since 2021, is linked to Kanu’s detention. They emphasized that national unity and stability require urgent dialogue and reconciliation.

The appeal referenced recent government talks with militant groups in other parts of Nigeria as a model for resolving conflicts through negotiation rather than extended detention. Lawmakers believe a political window is necessary to address grievances and foster peace.

The letter highlighted growing public support for Kanu’s release and the discontinuance of his prosecution. Lawmakers said constructive dialogue could offer a fair political resolution while reducing tensions and promoting national healing.

The call to President Tinubu reflects a broader push by some federal lawmakers for political solutions to conflicts in the South-East, signaling that legal action alone may not resolve the underlying issues affecting the region.
