Paystack Crisis Deepens As Co-founder Faces Misconduct Probe

Paystack has moved swiftly to suspend its co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Ezra Olubi, after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced online.

The issue escalated when old posts and claims made by his former partner resurfaced, sparking nationwide outrage.

The suspension was confirmed through a statement shared with TechCabal. The company said it had opened a formal investigation and directed Olubi to step aside from all responsibilities while the inquiry runs its course. Paystack added that it would avoid further public comments to protect the people involved and ensure a fair process.

The uproar grew after Nigerians dug up decade-old tweets from Olubi, many of which contained sexually inappropriate statements, including remarks involving colleagues and minors. The posts, dating between 2010 and 2017, spread quickly across multiple platforms, fuelling calls for accountability. Olubi deleted his X account shortly after the tweets resurfaced and has not publicly responded to the allegations.

The claims originated from his former partner, popularly known as Maki, who accused him of abusive behaviour and manipulation during their relationship. Her statements prompted renewed scrutiny of past misconduct in the African tech ecosystem.

The situation arrives at a time when the industry has already been grappling with ethical concerns involving senior executives. Last year, the CEO of a major Kenyan IT firm was sanctioned following similar accusations, adding to ongoing debates about leadership conduct and the responsibility owed to workplace communities.

As the investigation continues, the case has opened wider conversations about power, behaviour, and the standards expected of those leading Africa’s fast-growing tech sector.
