Two Kano NNPP Lawmakers Defect To APC As Party Leaders Flood National Assembly

Top members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) made a surprise appearance at the House of Representatives on Thursday as two New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) lawmakers from Kano State officially joined the ruling party.

Those present included APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda; Deputy Senate President, Jibril Barau; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; and former APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Their presence drew attention as they gathered to witness the formal defection.

The lawmakers who switched parties are Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, and Hon. Sagir Koki, representing Kano Municipal Federal Constituency. Both cited ongoing internal crises and leadership disputes within the NNPP as their reason for abandoning the party.

Their letters of defection were read on the floor of the House by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, who welcomed the lawmakers into the APC fold. However, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda raised repeated points of order challenging the move, arguing that the defections breached parliamentary procedure, but the Speaker did not recognise his objections.

The development marks another political shift in Kano’s growing realignment ahead of the 2027 elections. Observers say the defection strengthens the APC’s position in the North-West and deepens the cracks within the NNPP, which has faced mounting internal disputes since last year’s polls.

The ceremony ended with cheers from APC lawmakers, signalling what party insiders described as the start of more defections expected in the coming months.
