The standoff between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has deepened as the union rejected a proposed 35 percent salary increase for university lecturers.

At its recent National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, ASUU’s 89 branches voted against the new offer, describing it as unacceptable and far below expectations. The union insisted that the government should adopt the salary structure proposed by the former renegotiation team led by Prof. Nimi Briggs.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed that none of the branches accepted the government’s proposal. He said the union would not compromise on its earlier agreement under the Nimi Briggs committee, which set a benchmark for improved academic remuneration.

The Briggs-led committee, in 2022, recommended a monthly salary of N1.2 million for professors in public universities — a proposal the government later abandoned. Currently, professors earn less than N500,000 monthly.
In contrast, the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) had earlier suggested that professors’ salaries be increased to N800,000, representing a 50 percent raise, which was still below the Nimi Briggs recommendation.
ASUU maintained that the current offer does not reflect the economic realities facing lecturers or the value of their academic contributions. The rejection raises fresh concerns about another possible deadlock in the long-running negotiations between the union and the government over wages and working conditions in Nigerian universities.
