PDP Warns INEC And Security Agencies Ahead Of National Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the judiciary to ensure transparency and professionalism during its upcoming national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In a statement released by the party’s Convention Media and Publicity Sub-Committee and made available to journalists in Bauchi, the PDP called for patriotism from all state institutions before, during, and after the convention to guarantee a peaceful and credible process.

The party expressed concern over fears that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) might attempt to interfere with or halt the exercise through judicial or political means. It said the opposition party’s track record had created doubts about the possibility of free internal political activities.

According to the statement, certain elements within and outside the PDP were allegedly working with the APC to destabilize the convention and weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. It described such individuals as political saboteurs serving “selfish interests,” warning that they would eventually face consequences for their actions.

The Sub-Committee also raised the alarm about potential misuse of security agencies, especially the police, to obstruct or disperse delegates during the event. It cautioned that such actions could damage public trust and undermine democratic freedom.

The PDP argued that democracy thrives only when opposition parties are allowed to operate freely. It said suppressing dissenting voices equates to silencing the people, warning that the misuse of national institutions for partisan gain could push Nigeria toward authoritarianism.

Reaffirming its confidence in the new INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the PDP said it would continue to closely observe the Commission’s handling of the process to ensure neutrality. It also appealed to all national institutions to act in the interest of Nigeria rather than political powers.

The party urged members to remain united and resist attempts by “fifth columnists” to derail the exercise, describing the convention as a crucial step in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

It said the PDP remains the only truly national party with a legacy of inclusive governance, recalling the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan as a period marked by affordability and visionary leadership.

The statement concluded that the party leadership and caucus were working tirelessly to prevent any sabotage, while also engaging civil society groups and international partners to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic process.
