The Nigerian Medical Association has informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that the illness of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is not life-threatening.

The medical panel set up by the NMA president confirmed that Kanu is fit to stand trial after completing the health assessment ordered by the court.

Justice James Omotosho had earlier directed the NMA to conduct an independent medical review following conflicting reports from the defence and the prosecution.

Kanu is currently facing terrorism-related charges filed by the Federal Government.

In its report submitted on October 13 by the prosecution team led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) and partly read in open court, the NMA stated that Kanu’s condition does not pose any immediate risk to his life.
Relying on the findings, and with no objections from both sides, Justice Omotosho ruled that Kanu is fit to proceed with his defence. The court fixed six consecutive days from October 23 for Kanu to open and close his case.
The judge also granted an oral request by Kanu’s lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), to hold a private consultation with his client outside the Department of State Services (DSS) facility.
The court approved that the meeting be held in the courtroom between 9 a.m. and 12 noon on October 22, with only Kanu and his lawyers present, ahead of the trial’s resumption the next day.
