Yakubu Gowon University Elevates 104 Staff To Professorial Rank

The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, recently renamed Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the promotion of 104 academic staff members to professorial positions.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of Information and University Relations, the council confirmed that 58 lecturers were promoted to the rank of professor, while 46 others advanced to associate professor.

The promotions cut across a wide range of disciplines, including agriculture, animal science, Islamic studies, Islamic history and ethics, clinical sciences, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, radiology, ophthalmology, theatre arts, social science education, civil engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, pharmacology, statistics, applied mathematics, nursing, and allied health sciences.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mathew Adamu, congratulated the newly elevated scholars, describing the exercise as a recognition of their dedication to research, teaching, and community service.

He said the promotions represent the highest number ever in the university’s history, crediting the development to the council and management’s commitment to rewarding excellence and strengthening the institution’s academic capacity.

“With the stability the University currently enjoys, greater achievements lie ahead,” Adamu said, adding that the institution is determined to build on this momentum to compete with world-class universities.

The Governing Council chairman, Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, also reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to sustain an improved and timely reward system for staff.

The institution noted that the landmark promotion exercise signals a renewed drive to boost scholarship and position Yakubu Gowon University as a hub of academic excellence.
