Ex ICAN President Becomes Head Of Ruling House Ahead Of Awujale Selection

Former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Abdulateef Owoyemi, has taken over leadership of the Fusengbuwa ruling house in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

His emergence comes as the family prepares to produce the next Awujale following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on July 13 at the age of 91 after a reign of 65 years.

Owoyemi’s appointment followed the resignation of Dr Kunle Hassan, founder of Eye Foundation Hospital and Chairman of the Governing Board of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu. Hassan stepped down during a special Fusengbuwa Ruling House Unification and Integration meeting held at Oba Adesimbo Tunwase Court in Ijebu Ode. He explained that his decision was influenced by new developments and the change in dynamics after the passing of the late Awujale.

Hassan, who became head of the ruling house after the death of billionaire banker and Olori Omooba of Ijebu land, Otunba Subomi Balogun, thanked family members for their support during his tenure. He called on them to rally behind Owoyemi in order to strengthen unity within the house and ensure that the collective interest of Ijebu land is protected.

The former family head described Owoyemi as a versatile and dedicated leader with the experience needed to steer the affairs of the ruling house. He also stressed the importance of unity, noting that the family must speak with one voice during the process of selecting the next Awujale.

In his acceptance speech, Owoyemi promised to lead with fairness, transparency, and the fear of God. He said he has been an active member of the Fusengbuwa ruling house for over four decades and understands the challenges ahead. According to him, every member of the family, regardless of status or gender, will be given a voice in the decision-making process.

Owoyemi assured that the selection of the new Awujale would be open and fair, giving qualified candidates an equal opportunity. He expressed confidence that the next monarch would write a remarkable chapter in the history of Ijebu land and Yoruba heritage.

He also pledged to promote unity within the family, noting that the ruling house must remain united to uphold its royal responsibilities and sustain the legacy of Oba Adetona.
