Nearly 300 members of the All Progressives Congress have crossed over to the People’s Democratic Party in Sakwaya Ward, Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The defection, which took place on Friday at the PDP ward office, saw 289 people—273 women and 16 men—officially welcomed into the opposition party.

Deputy state chairman of the PDP, Umar Danjani, who represented the state chairman, received the new members and described the development as a major boost to the party’s grassroots strength ahead of the 2027 elections. He assured them of full support and integration into the party’s activities, adding that the PDP would intensify mobilisation across the state.

“We welcome you with open arms and promise to address your concerns as we build a stronger Jigawa together,” Danjani said, while urging politicians to play by democratic rules as preparations for 2027 continue.
Prominent PDP ward leader, Mamuda Sakwaya, hailed the defection as a milestone for the party in the state, noting that the influx of members reflected PDP’s rising influence at the grassroots.
Leader of the defectors, Mrs. Harira Sakwaya—wife of the APC ward chairman—criticised her former party, saying APC had failed its members and left them disappointed. She praised former governor Sule Lamido for his contributions to Sakwaya and vowed loyalty to the PDP.
The defection, observers say, signals growing cracks in the APC’s local base while boosting PDP’s confidence ahead of the polls.
