Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed reports suggesting he has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race. The speculation arose after a publication claimed he had opted out to avoid disrupting Southern political unity.

Although Jonathan has yet to formally declare his ambition, sources close to him say he has been holding consultations across the country as part of moves to secure a return to office.

His cousin, Azibaola Robert, addressed the matter on Friday through a post on his verified Facebook page, where he clarified that Jonathan never stated he would not contest. He described the report by Newsweek Nigeria as false and misleading.

Azibaola explained that the supposed aide quoted by the publication does not exist, stressing that the former president has not made any statement ruling himself out of the race.
According to him, while Jonathan has not officially announced his candidacy, he has also not closed the door on contesting in 2027. He added that attempts by certain groups to pressure the former president into stepping aside were driven by selfish motives.
The clarification has further fueled speculation within political circles that Jonathan remains in play ahead of the next general election.
