The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has clarified that the 2009 agreement remains the only signed and binding pact between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The clarification was issued on Friday in Abuja through a statement by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo.

Boriowo explained that Alausa’s remarks during a media chat on Thursday were misinterpreted, stressing that while the Nimi Briggs draft was produced in 2021, it was never signed by the government.

She recalled that the renegotiation process began in 2017 under then Education Minister, Malam Adamu Adamu, culminating in the Briggs draft of May 2021.

“However, this 2021 draft agreement was not signed by the Federal Government,” Boriowo said. “When the minister stated there had been no new signed agreement with ASUU, he was referring specifically to the Nimi Briggs document.”
She reaffirmed that the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement remains the last formally signed document, while the Briggs draft only serves as a framework for ongoing discussions.
According to her, the government is committed to ending the long-standing impasse with ASUU in a sustainable way that keeps universities open for teaching and research.
“The Ministry of Education urges the public and stakeholders to disregard any misinterpretations. The Federal Government remains firm in its commitment to resolving issues with ASUU under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement added.
