The Atóbaáse of Yorubaland, Dr. Babajide Agunbiade, has declared full support for the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, amid renewed disputes over Yoruba traditional leadership.

In a letter addressed to the Alaafin, Agunbiade praised the monarch’s firm position against what he called “the alleged absurdity” of the Ooni of Ife, while stressing that the Ooni remains custodian of Yoruba spiritual heritage. He, however, maintained that the Alaafin holds the historical and political supremacy in Yorubaland.

According to him, only the Alaafin has the authority to issue Yoruba-wide titles, a position he said has been upheld in several judicial pronouncements, including affirmation by the Supreme Court. He argued that this authority is rooted in history, pointing to the dominance of the Oyo Empire, which once stretched across present-day Yorubaland, Dahomey, Offa, and parts of Kogi State.

Agunbiade urged unity among Yoruba people and advised the Alaafin to take every necessary step, including legal action, to protect his status as paramount ruler. He described the matter as essential to safeguarding the cultural heritage and traditions of the Yoruba nation.
He accused the Ooni of recent moves aimed at undermining the Alaafin’s authority and called on Yoruba sons and daughters to rally behind the Oyo throne.
Concluding his message, Agunbiade encouraged the Alaafin to remain steadfast, assuring him of widespread support: “All well-meaning Yoruba stand firmly behind you.”
Dr. Agunbiade, an engineer, philanthropist, and cultural advocate, currently holds the title of Atóbaáse of Yorubaland.
