Osun Monarchs Move to Settle Dispute Between king And Speaker

Traditional rulers in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State have stepped in to mediate a growing rift between the Alasi of Asi, Oba Isaac Oyewale, and the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun.

The move followed rising tensions that recently spilled onto social media and into the streets.

The President of the council, Oba Abioye Oyebode, who is also the Olokuku of Okuku, confirmed the intervention during a press briefing at his palace. He said the traditional council had assigned him and the Oloyan of Oyan, Oba Kilani Adekeye, to meet with Oba Oyewale to gather full details about the dispute with the lawmaker.

The controversy gained public attention after an audio recording surfaced online in which Speaker Egbedun accused the Alasi of siding with thugs who allegedly attacked him during a visit to Okuku. The speaker’s remarks stirred reactions in Asi, where some youths took to the streets in protest. They accused the monarch of targeting Egbedun, a native of the town.

Attempts to get a response from Oba Oyewale have not been successful. Repeated calls and messages to the monarch were not returned.

In response to the rising tension, the Odo-Otin Traditional Council held a meeting on Thursday where the matter was discussed among various royal fathers. The attendees, which included the Oloyan of Oyan, the Atapara of Iyeku, and the Alagbeye of Agbeye, expressed concern over the situation and agreed that more facts were needed before taking further steps.

The council resolved that Oba Oyebode and Oba Adekeye should meet with Oba Oyewale to clarify his side of the story. The meeting with the monarch was scheduled for Friday evening, and the traditional leaders hope it will help de-escalate the situation.

Oba Oyebode noted that Speaker Egbedun enjoys the support of the traditional rulers, given his service to the local communities, including project facilitation and empowerment initiatives. However, he said he was not aware of what exactly triggered the fallout between the two parties.

The monarch also assured residents that the matter is being treated with care and is not beyond resolution. He called for calm and urged both sides to work together in the interest of peace.

The Oloyan of Oyan, Oba Adekeye, added that he had already reached out to both Egbedun and Oba Oyewale once the issue came to his attention. He said Egbedun pledged to cooperate fully, and expressed confidence that the issue will be resolved through dialogue.
