The Federal Government has withdrawn a controversial circular that triggered a nationwide strike by nurses and pledged to resolve the dispute through continued dialogue.

Health Minister Ali Pate confirmed the decision after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, saying the government is committed to keeping hospitals running and addressing health workers’ demands.

The now-withdrawn circular, issued by the Accrued Wages Commission, had caused unrest over issues related to wage structures and arrears. The Nigeria Union of Nurses and other health unions had threatened further industrial action if the matter wasn’t addressed.

Pate said the government is already negotiating with the unions and has extended deadlines to give room for constructive engagement. He assured that arrears are being worked on and the Ministry of Finance is overseeing disbursement.

On nurses’ demand for centralised postings, Pate said an agreement has been reached to manage them fairly and orderly.
He also announced fresh investments in health infrastructure, including a new oncology centre upgrade at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, worth N3.7 billion. This follows earlier cancer centres launched in Katsina, Enugu, and Maiduguri.
He said more facilities are being developed nationwide, including major new projects at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
Pate urged health workers to prioritise patient care as talks continue, assuring them that the Tinubu administration is working in good faith to improve welfare and healthcare delivery.
