US Warns Nigerians Against Birth Tourism For Citizenship

The United States has issued a fresh warning to Nigerians planning to travel with the aim of giving birth in the country to secure citizenship for their children.

The warning came through a message shared on Monday via the official social media platforms of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.

This caution is aimed at pregnant Nigerian women who apply for U.S. visas with the intent to deliver their babies on American soil. According to the U.S. government, such trips violate immigration policy and are not acceptable grounds for obtaining a visa.

U.S. consular officers have now been directed to thoroughly scrutinize visa applications from pregnant women. If there is any indication that their main reason for travel is childbirth for citizenship purposes, their applications will be denied outright.

The U.S. Mission explained that while travel to America is still permitted for tourism, business, education, and other lawful purposes, trying to use a visa solely to gain citizenship for a newborn is a misuse of the system.

This move comes as part of broader efforts to prevent visa fraud and misuse of the immigration process. It also reflects long-standing concerns by the U.S. government about the rising number of applicants using tourist visas for childbirth without declaring their true intentions.

Nigerians are advised to ensure full transparency in their visa applications and avoid presenting misleading reasons for travel. The embassy stated that violators risk denial and possibly being barred from future entry into the U.S.
