The Social Democratic Party issued a statement declaring that El-Rufai had been barred from all party-related activities and from seeking any political role within the party until July 28, 2055. The decision, according to the party’s National Working Committee, was based on internal rules and national laws that grant political parties the autonomy to determine their membership.

The party accused El-Rufai of misrepresenting his status, claiming he had never officially registered with the party at the ward level as required. Despite this, he allegedly continued to parade himself as a member and was seen attending functions with SDP leaders. The party also said he used social media to create the impression that he had joined the party in Kaduna, even though its state chapter had no record of his registration.

In response to the ban, the Presidency weighed in with sarcasm. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, described El-Rufai as an “internally displaced politician,” mocking his shifting political affiliations. The jab, posted on social media, added to the growing public attention the case is receiving.
El-Rufai has not officially responded to either the party’s allegations or the presidency’s comments. However, the SDP has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission and other relevant bodies to take note of his non-member status and act accordingly in any future dealings.
The party also reminded its members and the general public to avoid any political engagement with El-Rufai, declaring that he no longer speaks for or represents the SDP in any form.
