PDP says it is ready to defeat APC in 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party has declared that it is the only political force strong enough to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 presidential election.

The statement came during a press briefing in Abuja, where PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the ruling APC had failed Nigerians. He said President Tinubu’s administration has struggled to address rising insecurity, economic hardship, and public discontent. According to him, the people will not reward failure with another term in office.

He stressed that the PDP is already rebuilding its base and preparing for the next general elections. The party is expected to hold its 101st National Executive Committee meeting from July 23 to 25, during which key matters like zoning and convention planning will be addressed. The meeting will also ratify recent state congress results and map out strategy for 2027.

The party recently overcame an internal leadership crisis involving the position of national secretary, which had previously stalled activities at its headquarters in Abuja. Now that the matter has been resolved, PDP leaders say they are more united and focused ahead of the next national convention.

Despite recent defections that saw some top party figures join rival camps—including Governors Sheriff Oborevweri and Umo Eno shifting to APC, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Senate President David Mark moving to the Action Democratic Congress—PDP says it remains strong. According to Ologunagba, the real power of the party lies not just in its leaders but in its widespread grassroots support.

The party acknowledged the defections but said they were not a threat to its chances. Ologunagba insisted that while individuals may leave, the followers at the base have remained loyal, and the party’s national reach remains intact.

He criticized President Tinubu’s leadership, describing his tenure as disappointing. He also pointed to low voter turnout in the recent Lagos local government elections as a sign that APC is losing public support. According to him, only six percent of registered voters participated, showing silent disapproval of the ruling party.

He argued that the 2027 elections will not be won by noise or political theatrics but by the people’s vote. He believes the public has grown tired of what he described as policy failures and growing insecurity, and will respond at the ballot box.

The PDP says it is working towards a successful national convention and will be entering the 2027 elections with renewed energy. With preparations underway, the party says it is confident that Nigerians are ready for change—and that it is the only party with the reach, structure, and experience to deliver it.
