Gunmen suspected to be cult members have shot and killed Chief Ferdinand Dabiri, a traditional ruler in the Obelle community of Emohua Local Government Area in Rivers State.

Dabiri, who was the vice chairman of the Obelle Council of Chiefs, was attacked during a meeting of traditional leaders on Saturday evening. Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the venue at Omuwoka village and opened fire, forcing other chiefs to flee for their lives.

The chief’s son, Joseph Dabiri, confirmed the killing and said the matter had been reported to the Rumuji Police Division. He called on authorities to bring the attackers to justice. The Rivers State Police Command is yet to officially comment on the incident.

The killing comes amid renewed cult violence in Rivers State. Over the weekend, police operatives in Port Harcourt foiled a bloody clash between rival cult gangs near Azikiwe Street and Opobo Lane in the Diobu area.
Witnesses said chaos broke out as members of one group were on their way to a university campus to attack their rivals. A shootout erupted when the two gangs crossed paths in the area, forcing traders to close their shops and residents to flee.
Police from the Azikiwe Division and the Octopus Tactical Unit responded swiftly, arresting three suspects. State police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrests and said officers recovered a revolver pistol, live ammunition, and three used bullets from the suspects.
She added that investigations are ongoing to track down the fleeing gang members.
