The federal government is working with the World Bank to support local fish farmers and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported fish, according to Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola.

Speaking at a meeting with fisheries cooperatives in Abuja on Wednesday, Oyetola said the government is committed to expanding domestic fish production and making aquaculture a key driver of food security and job creation.

He said the ministry is pushing for policies, technical support, and financial inclusion to scale up the sector. Talks are ongoing with the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) to provide affordable insurance for fish farmers.

The minister added that discussions are also underway with the Ministry of Water Resources to replicate the successful Oyan Dam aquaculture model in other regions. He stressed that involving more young people in aquaculture would not only boost production but also tackle unemployment.
