The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed plans to appeal the recent court ruling that cleared former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, of a ₦6.9 billion fraud case.

The decision follows a judgment delivered by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Fayose was initially charged with money laundering and theft after allegedly receiving huge sums of cash during his 2014 governorship campaign. The EFCC had accused him of accepting ₦1.2 billion and $5 million in cash from a former minister, alongside using other funds to acquire properties through front companies. The case was refiled in 2019 and dragged through court for over six years.

Justice Aneke ruled in favor of Fayose, stating that the EFCC failed to link him to the crimes. The judge upheld a no-case submission filed by Fayose’s legal team and discharged the former governor.
Reacting to the decision, the EFCC said it was reviewing the court’s judgment and preparing the necessary documents to appeal. The agency noted that it remains committed to pursuing the matter through the proper legal process and will not back down from seeking justice in the case.
Fayose’s acquittal marks a major development in one of Nigeria’s most closely watched corruption trials. Though the former governor has repeatedly maintained his innocence, the EFCC’s move to challenge the ruling signals that the case is far from over.
