Police Tighten Security In Oyo As Black Axe Marks Founders Day

Police authorities in Oyo State have rolled out a statewide security operation ahead of the annual Founders’ Day celebration of the Neo-Black Movement of Africa, commonly known as the Black Axe cult.

The celebration is scheduled for Monday, July 7, 2025. This was announced in a statement from the state police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, who said the move was based on intelligence reports warning of possible clashes between rival cult groups during the event.

Officers have been stationed at various strategic locations across Oyo to deter violence and ensure a swift response to any potential outbreak of unrest. The police command said the deployment follows extensive planning under its intelligence-led policing strategy and partnerships with local communities.

The command also held a series of sensitisation meetings with key players in the hospitality sector, including hotel managers, lounge owners, and short-let apartment operators. They were warned against allowing their facilities to be used for gatherings linked to cult-related activities. The police described such gatherings as high-risk and often a trigger for violent attacks and reprisals.

Authorities believe the Founders’ Day could be used as cover by some members of the movement to launch attacks on rival groups, a pattern seen in previous years.

In response, the police are calling on parents, guardians, traditional rulers, and local influencers to engage young people and discourage involvement in cultism. The command stressed that everyone has a role to play in preventing violence and promoting peace.

The Oyo State Police Command also urged citizens to report any suspicious gatherings or movements, assuring the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order throughout the state during the period.
