The Federal Government has said it is open to discussing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), but will not accept any attempt to tie his freedom to political support for President Bola Tinubu.

Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, made this known while speaking to journalists in Lagos on Friday night. He dismissed the suggestion that political leaders from the South East had made Kanu’s release a condition for supporting the Tinubu administration. According to him, the president was not responsible for Kanu’s detention and should not be pressured over the matter.

Umahi explained that while the federal government is not against exploring dialogue as a means of resolving Kanu’s case, it will not do so under political blackmail. He said the process must be guided by law and mutual understanding, and not by ultimatums or political trading.

He also spoke in support of Tinubu’s leadership, pointing to what he described as the president’s ability to listen and make bold decisions. According to Umahi, the president inherited a weak economy but has managed to attract international support for his reforms. He credited ongoing road and infrastructure works in various parts of the country, including the South East, to Tinubu’s commitment to development.
The minister further stated that the South East is fully backing the Tinubu administration and will continue to support him beyond 2027. He said opposition figures in the region are also cooperating with the federal government for the good of the people.
On claims that the South East is being left out in federal appointments, Umahi disagreed. He said the region is now more involved at the federal level than before and urged leaders from the zone to unite and support national progress.
Speaking about his own political future, Umahi ruled out contesting for the presidency in 2027. He said his focus remains on supporting President Tinubu and delivering on his duties as Minister of Works. He also described the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the best political platform for achieving the South East’s goals, adding that the region now has a clear voice in national affairs.
