Exclusive: Citing COVID-19, Fayemi Uses Police To Stop Ekiti Youths’ Prayer Rally Over Govt Neglect

Ekiti State Government has stopped a prayer rally by youths in Ikole Local Government area of the State, against the government’s neglect of communities in the local Council.
The rally was planned by 25 communities in the local government for Saturday, August 28, 2021, in Ikole Ekiti.
However, sensing that the prayer rally will expose his government’s lack of tangible achievements, sources told WazobiaReporters that Governor Fayemi promptly contacted the State Commissioner of Police, … to get him to use his office to stop the rally.
The police, had in a letter dated August 23, 2021, addressed to the Special Adviser to Governor Kayode Fayemi on Communication and Strategy, Akin Rotimi, advised that COVID-19 pandemic be used to stop the rally.
“Find attached of a letter received from Concerned Ikole LGA Indigenes dated 14/07/2021, on the above subject matter.
“I respectfully convey the directives of the Commissioner of Police that, you contact the Elekole of Ikole Ekiti and the local Government Chainman (sic) Ikole that due to the hike in cases of Covid-19, it is not advisable for the programme to hold, please,” the letter read.
Two days after, a letter was written to the youths by Fayemi’s Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy.
The letter with reference number
EK/SACS/012 and dated August 25, 2021, read; “We are in receipt of a letter from the office of the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, which is a response to your letter informing his office of a prayer rally planned for Saturday, August 28, 2021.
“We have been requested to convey the contents of the letter to you, please, especially the advisory of the Commissioner of Police, that due to the spike in cases of COVID-19, the programme should not hold as planned.
“You may wish to comply with the advisory or communicate further with the Commissioner for Police, please.”
One of the youths who spoke with our reporter under the condition of anonymity said that it was strange that the government could be so jittery over ordinary prayer rally.
“We have called out top government functionaries on the plight of the LGA under this present government but our calls were taken for granted.
“That’s why we opted for the prayer rally but the same Governor who attended the wedding of the President’s son last week is telling us that we can’t gather to pray. It is so funny.”
