Akwa Ibom State has become the latest state in Nigeria to close its borders in a bid to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

The Secretary to State Government (SSG), Emmanuel Ekuwem in a statement on Thursday said salaries of state government workers for the month of March will be paid today, Thursday, March 26.

While calling on churches to fast and pray for God’s mercies, he maintained that there is no confirmed COVID-19 case in Akwa Ibom, but that “prevention is better than cure.”

The SSG said that with effect from Monday, March 30, 2020, workers will be stopped from going to work for a week, emphasising that the stay-at-home order will be strongly enforced.

As for the closing of borders, Ekuwem disclosed that the measure would exempt those that are transporting food items.
He stated that markets in the state are to remain open for the sale of foodstuff and essential items only.
“While the one-week stay-at-home order subsists, the Akwa Ibom State Government will continue to monitor and provide regular updates on any development in the COVID-19 situation in our state,” he said.
“The Governor also enjoins all residents and citizens; including professional bodies, to desists from creating unnecessary panic within the state by propagating unverified news, whipping up selfish and myopic sentiments and fanning the embers of discord for pecuniary / or political gains.”
All schools in Akwa Ibom will be completely closed by Friday and gatherings of more than 10 persons are closely being monitored.
