President Bola Tinubu has said he appeared to have little chance of winning the 2023 presidential election but expressed gratitude to Nigerians, particularly the people of Rivers State, for supporting his ambition.
Tinubu spoke on Saturday during his campaign visit to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, where he recalled the support he received during the last presidential election.
The President said the votes he received from Nigerians gave him the mandate he currently exercises as leader of the country.
He thanked Rivers residents for turning out to support him despite what he described as his seemingly hopeless position ahead of the election.
Tinubu said their support made a positive contribution to his emergence as President and the administration he currently leads.
The President is seeking re-election in the 2027 general election.
His major challengers include former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
