The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of planning to rig the 2027 general elections in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) using artificial intelligence (AI).
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, questioned the commission’s decision to introduce AI into the electoral process, alleging that the technology could be used to favour the ruling party.
INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan had earlier disclosed the commission’s plan to deploy AI in the 2027 general elections.
Reacting to the announcement, the Director questioned how INEC could effectively use AI to address electoral challenges when the government had yet to deploy the technology successfully to tackle insecurity.
In a statement posted on X, the NDC spokesman described the proposed use of AI as suspicious and questioned why the commission had not tested the technology during off-cycle elections before introducing it in a general election.
He specifically asked why the technology was not tested during the Osun State elections, arguing that its effectiveness should be assessed before wider deployment.
Director also questioned the urgency of the plan, suggesting that the timing raised concerns about the commission’s intentions ahead of the 2027 polls.
The allegations were made by the NDC, and no evidence was provided in the report to substantiate claims that INEC intended to rig the election.
