The Adewole Adebayo-Usman Bugaje Presidential Campaign of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has suspended all campaign activities for one week following the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State.
The decision was announced on Wednesday in a statement issued in Abuja by the campaign’s Head of Media and Communications Directorate, Mark Adebayo.
The NAF ATR-42 aircraft crashed on Monday in the coastal riverine area of Igbokoda, with 25 people reported dead.
The SDP campaign said the suspension was intended to honour those who lost their lives in the incident and show solidarity with the Nigerian Air Force and the wider Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The campaign expressed grief over the crash, noting that the victims had served the country and made sacrifices in the course of their duties.
It said the national tragedy required a period of mourning and reflection, with political activities temporarily put aside.
According to the campaign, SDP presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo and his running mate, Usman Bugaje, had conveyed their condolences to the Chief of the Air Staff, the leadership of the Nigerian Air Force and the families of those who died.
As part of the suspension, all scheduled rallies, town hall meetings, stakeholder engagements and media appearances by the campaign have been put on hold for the duration of the mourning period.
The campaign also called for comprehensive insurance coverage for personnel of the Armed Forces and other security agencies, citing the risks faced by officers while carrying out their responsibilities.
It further urged authorities to ensure regular and proper maintenance of military aircraft and other equipment to reduce the occurrence of air crashes and other preventable accidents.
The campaign said the welfare and safety of military personnel should receive greater attention in view of the sacrifices made by officers serving the country.
