The South-West Voters Association of Nigerian Youths has chosen the Social Democratic Party presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, as its preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
The association announced its decision during a press briefing held at the Airport Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, on Wednesday, October 7.
SWAVANY said the endorsement followed consultations held over three months across the six states in the South-West.
The group said it engaged different categories of residents, including youths, students, farmers, artisans, traders and professionals, before deciding on the SDP candidate.
It said its structures cover all 137 local government areas and more than 1,500 wards in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti states.
The association said the economic difficulties being experienced by Nigerians were among the major issues that informed its decision.
It listed rising prices, unemployment, insecurity, challenges in the petroleum sector and problems affecting education and healthcare as some of the issues that require urgent attention from the next administration.
SWAVANY said young Nigerians had been badly affected by the current economic situation and needed an administration that would create opportunities for employment and business.
The group said Adebayo’s economic proposals met some of these expectations, particularly his plan to create 30 million jobs through agriculture, housing, light manufacturing and the digital economy.
It also backed his proposed approach to tackling insecurity through increased recruitment and training of security personnel, better equipment, technology and community-based security measures.
The association said the SDP candidate’s position on domestic refining also influenced its decision.
It said his proposed rehabilitation of existing refineries and support for modular refineries could help increase local production of petroleum products.
SWAVANY further said it considered Adebayo’s position on the rule of law, accountability and the management of public resources.
The group also pointed to his plan to give youths and women a major role in government, including a proposal for youths and women to make up 70 per cent of government appointees.
According to the association, Adebayo’s presentation of his manifesto in Ibadan also gave members an opportunity to assess his plans for the country.
Following the endorsement, SWAVANY directed its coordinators and grassroots mobilisers to begin work immediately across the South-West.
The association said its members would campaign, educate voters and mobilise eligible residents to vote for Adebayo and the SDP in the 2027 presidential election.
It set a target of six million youth votes for Adebayo from the South-West.
The group also appealed to student organisations, youth groups, artisans, market associations and other progressive groups in the region to support its political campaign.
SWAVANY said it expected the SDP candidate to tackle poverty, insecurity and other problems confronting Nigerians if elected president.
