Squadron Leader Ahamefule Man-Ugwueje, one of the co-pilots aboard the Nigerian Air Force ATR 42-500MP aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, died just two weeks after his wedding.
Man-Ugwueje reportedly married Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle on September 20 in an elaborate ceremony held in Abuja. Videos and photographs from the wedding were shared on the social media pages of the event planner and vendors involved in the ceremony.
The Squadron Leader, whose rank is equivalent to Major in the Nigerian Army, is survived by his wife, parents and other family members.
Information on his Facebook profile listed Umuahia in Abia State as his hometown and Abuja as his current city.
The aircraft, registered as NAF 931, crashed on Monday while carrying 25 people on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos. The Nigerian Air Force later confirmed that all 25 people on board, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers, died in the accident.
The Air Force subsequently released the names of those who died in the crash.
The ATR 42-500MP involved in the accident had reportedly been returned to service in December 2024 after undergoing maintenance at Mönchengladbach, Germany. Aviation records indicate that the aircraft had been in storage since 2021.
The aircraft, said to be about 18 years old, had been used for VIP transportation, the movement of students and personnel, as well as other operational assignments after its return to service.
The cause of Monday’s crash has not been established, as investigations into the accident continue.
