President Bola Tinubu has described the state of Nigeria when he assumed office in 2023 as that of a sick patient who had just been told he had cancer.
Tinubu made the statement on Thursday in his nationwide broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day anniversary.
The President said his administration had chosen a different approach by introducing difficult reforms that previous governments, including that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, did not implement.
According to him, Nigeria had for years relied on temporary measures to manage its problems instead of addressing their underlying causes.
Tinubu said successive governments had concentrated on dealing with the symptoms of the country’s challenges while allowing deeper structural problems to persist.
He also said large amounts of public funds had been spent maintaining inefficient systems that were not sustainable, while difficult decisions were repeatedly avoided and their consequences passed on to future generations.
The President maintained that his administration’s reforms were intended to address those underlying problems rather than continue with measures that only provided temporary relief.
