Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has granted absolute pardon to 130 inmates in custodial facilities across the state and reduced the death sentences of four others to life imprisonment.
The governor announced the exercise of his prerogative of mercy on Thursday as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
In his Independence Day message to residents of Plateau State and Nigerians at home and abroad, Mutfwang said the decision followed consultations with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
He said the action was taken under the powers granted to the governor by the Nigerian Constitution, as amended.
Mutfwang also used the occasion to reflect on Nigeria’s journey since independence, calling on citizens to remember the sacrifices made by previous generations of leaders.
He said the anniversary provided an opportunity for Nigerians to consider the country’s challenges, acknowledge its achievements and maintain their commitment to building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
The governor called on citizens to protect Nigeria’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, saying responsibility for nation-building had continued to pass from one generation to another.
He maintained that every citizen had a role in creating a peaceful and stable country.
Mutfwang also said Nigeria’s progress depended on citizens working together despite their differences and ensuring that people across the country had a sense of belonging and opportunities to pursue their aspirations.
The Plateau governor acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Tinubu in maintaining national unity and stability and advancing the country’s development.
He also referred to the Federal Government’s focus on national cohesion, peace and economic development.
On Plateau State, Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an environment where residents could pursue their aspirations under conditions of peace, security, justice and inclusive development.
He commended the people of Plateau for what he described as their resilience, patience and contributions to the development of the state and Nigeria.
The governor urged residents to remain committed to the country despite the challenges confronting it and encouraged Nigerians at home and abroad to mark the 66th Independence Anniversary peacefully.
He also called on citizens to contribute to building a country that reflects the sacrifices of past generations and the aspirations of future Nigerians.
