The Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NiHSA) has warned that high riverine flooding is expected across 15 states between September 19 and 25, 2026.

The agency said the affected states include Lagos, Delta, Imo, Cross River, Ebonyi, Benue, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Bayelsa, Enugu, Kogi, Abia, Taraba and Rivers.

The warning was contained in a seven-day National Flood Advisory issued by NiHSA Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Arch Umar Mohammed, on Friday.
NiHSA said rising river levels could trigger flooding in communities located on floodplains, with schools, healthcare facilities, markets, farms and religious buildings among the facilities exposed to the risk.
The agency advised affected state governments to urgently relocate residents living in vulnerable areas to safer and higher ground before the situation worsens.
For Imo State, the affected local government areas include Aboh-Mba, Ahizu-Mbaise, Ehime-Mbano, Ezinihitte, Ideato North, Ihitte-Uboma and Ikeduru. NiHSA identified 958 communities, 1,022 schools, 553 healthcare facilities, 161 markets and 198 religious buildings as being exposed.

In Cross River State, areas at risk include Abi, Akamkpa, Akpabuyo, Biase, Calabar, Calabar South, Ikom and Obubra. The agency listed 2,471 communities, 703 schools, 344 healthcare facilities, 145 markets, 453 religious buildings and 854 hectares of farmland as vulnerable.
Ebonyi State also faces flood risks in areas including Abakaliki, Afikpo, Afikpo South, Ebonyi, Ezza North and Ezza. About 2,574 communities, 1,064 schools, 422 healthcare facilities, 480 markets, 629 religious buildings and 1,882 hectares of farmland were identified as exposed.
In Benue, the affected local government areas include Buruku, Gboko, Guma, Katsina-Ala, Logo and Ukum. The advisory listed 303 communities, 100 schools, 48 healthcare facilities, 32 markets, 151 religious buildings and 55 hectares of farmland as being at risk.
NiHSA also identified Aguata, Anambra East, Anambra West, Anaocha, Awka North, Awka South and Ayamelum in Anambra State as vulnerable areas. The affected locations include 1,314 communities, 1,308 schools, 1,089 healthcare facilities, 280 markets, 610 religious buildings and 1,529 hectares of farmland.
In Akwa Ibom, Abak, Eket, Etinan, Ibeno, Ibesikpo Asutan, Ibiono Ibom, Ika and Ikono were listed among the affected local government areas. The agency identified 249 communities, 323 schools, 211 healthcare facilities, 74 markets and 289 religious buildings as exposed to the expected flooding.
The agency further listed Edo, Bayelsa, Enugu, Kogi, Delta, Abia, Taraba and Rivers among the states expected to experience serious effects from the forecast.
NiHSA urged residents and authorities in flood-prone communities to take early precautions and move vulnerable people and valuable property to safer locations before rising river levels cause widespread flooding.
