Veteran Actor Olu Jacobs Dies At 84

Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced his death on Wednesday in an Instagram post, describing the actor as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle.

The family also appealed to bloggers and social media users to respect its privacy as it mourns the veteran actor.

Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most respected actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film. He became known for his commanding performances and his ability to take on a wide range of roles throughout his decades-long career.

Jacobs received his formal acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. He began his professional career in British television and later appeared in international productions before returning to Nigeria.

After his return, he became a major figure in the Nigerian film industry and featured in numerous films and television productions. His performances earned him several industry honours over the years.

Among the recognitions he received were the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival.

Beyond acting, Jacobs also played a role in the development of Nigeria’s performing arts industry as a film executive.

He and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, were involved in the Lufodo Group and other initiatives connected with theatre, film and the performing arts.

His death marks the loss of one of the actors whose career helped shape Nigeria’s modern film and theatre industry.
