The Charismatic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has explained its decision to withdraw support for Peter Obi and back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The group, led by Leonard Kawas, said its decision was based on its assessment of the current administration and its belief that Tinubu was taking Nigeria in the right direction.

Kawas disclosed the position during an interview with Channels Television, recalling that he personally supported Obi against Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.

He explained that his decision to support Obi at the time was a personal choice based on the issues surrounding the election and his convictions at the time.

However, Kawas said his assessment had changed and that he and other members of the bishops’ group now believed Tinubu deserved their support for a second term.

The cleric said the group’s decision was not driven by political convenience but by its view of the direction of the country under the current administration.

According to him, the bishops believe Tinubu is on the right path and has the capacity to move Nigeria towards greater development if given another term.

The endorsement has placed the Charismatic Bishops among the religious groups taking positions ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

The election, scheduled for January 16, 2027, is expected to feature Tinubu, Obi, Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress and other presidential candidates.

The bishops’ decision also marks a change from the political position Kawas and his group adopted during the 2023 election, when they supported Obi’s presidential bid.

Kawas maintained that individuals and groups had the right to review their political choices based on developments in the country and their assessment of the performance of those in government.

He said the group was now convinced that supporting Tinubu was the appropriate position ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
