Senate President Godswill Akpabio has petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS) over a statement circulating on social media which he said was falsely attributed to him.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by his Special Assistant, Jackson Udom, on Wednesday.

In the petition signed by Akpabio’s Chief of Staff, Chinedu Akubueze, the Senate President asked the DSS to investigate the origin and coordinated distribution of the alleged statement across Facebook and other digital platforms.
The statement reportedly carried Akpabio’s photograph and official designation and contained comments suggesting that people from Northern Nigeria would suffer if President Bola Tinubu lost the 2027 election.
Akpabio denied making the statement and said there was no evidence linking him to it.
He noted that no speech, interview, video, audio recording, official communication or credible media report had been produced to establish that he made the alleged comments.
The Senate President also questioned the authenticity of the graphic, noting that it did not contain an identifiable publisher or verifiable source.

He alleged that the material was deliberately created and circulated to mislead members of the public, stir regional tension and damage his reputation among Nigerians in the North.
The petition identified Abdullai Musa as one of the earliest traceable accounts linked to the circulation of the graphic after it was allegedly posted in a Facebook group known as Sheik Muhammad bin Uthman Group 24.
It also mentioned Uzoma Chilaka, whose Facebook post allegedly reproduced the graphic with accompanying commentary, as well as Engineer Ibrahim Umar Ammar, whose verified account later shared the material and similar comments.
The petition stressed that the people named should not be regarded as guilty before the conclusion of any investigation.
They were described as persons of interest because of their alleged early involvement in distributing the material.
Akubueze said examining their publication records, electronic devices and communications could assist investigators in determining how the alleged false statement was created and distributed.
He added that tracing the image could help establish its original source and identify those behind its production, publication and wider distribution.
The Senate President therefore asked the DSS to investigate the matter in line with the law and determine those responsible for creating and circulating the alleged fabricated statement.
