The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has officially commenced its campaign for the 2027 governorship election, with thousands of supporters gathering in Abeokuta for the flag-off ceremony.

Party members, residents and supporters converged on the Ake Palace Pavilion on Wednesday to show their support for the party’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, and his running mate, ‘Yemi Showunmi-Kolapo.

The campaign activities began earlier at the PDP Secretariat in Abeokuta, where party leaders, including Adebutu, Showunmi-Kolapo and former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, were received by enthusiastic supporters.
The campaign procession from the party secretariat to the venue caused heavy traffic as large crowds filled the roads while accompanying the candidates.
Supporters waved PDP flags and banners carrying the images of the candidates as they sang and danced during the procession.
Security personnel were deployed to manage the crowd and control movement around the venue as the number of attendees continued to increase.
The candidates and their supporters continued with the procession despite heavy rainfall, with the crowd remaining at the venue for the campaign programme.
The event marked the beginning of the PDP’s statewide campaign as the party seeks to strengthen its structures and mobilise voters ahead of the 2027 election.
Speaking during the flag-off, Adebutu presented his campaign message under the theme, A Call to Liberation, and urged Ogun residents to vote out the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He promised to provide better governance and introduce policies aimed at improving the welfare and economic conditions of residents if elected governor.
Adebutu said his administration would focus on tackling poor governance and corruption while creating an environment where residents could benefit more from government programmes.

He listed security, local government autonomy, regional development, transportation, physical planning, agricultural and economic development among the areas his administration would prioritise.
Other areas mentioned include the development of women, youths and sports, as well as improvements in education, healthcare and social services.
The PDP candidate also promised to ensure that workers and pensioners receive their entitlements once his administration assumes office.
He further pledged to address multiple taxation affecting traders and market women, while assuring residents that their political affiliations would not determine their access to government services.
Showunmi-Kolapo, in her address, thanked supporters for remaining at the venue despite the rainfall and expressed confidence in the party’s chances in the election.
She promised that a PDP administration led by Adebutu would work to reduce poverty and improve governance across Ogun State.
The deputy governorship candidate also appealed to residents to support Adebutu, arguing that it was time for him to take over the leadership of the state.
The Ogun PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, urged voters to support the party’s candidates, promising that their backing would be rewarded with better infrastructure, social amenities and improved governance.
Other PDP leaders used the campaign launch to rally support for the party and present their plans ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Supporters at the event pledged to vote for the PDP and protect their votes during the election.
Despite the heavy rainfall, the pavilion remained filled beyond capacity as more supporters continued to arrive.
Party supporters described the rain as a sign of good fortune and expressed optimism about the PDP’s prospects in the election.
