Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has threatened to take legal action against the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), over alleged defamatory statements made about him during a television interview.

El-Rufai, through his legal representatives, issued a formal letter of claim demanding that the minister retract the alleged defamatory remarks, issue an unreserved apology and preserve all evidence connected to the broadcast.

The letter, dated September 7, 2026, was issued by the Chambers of Ubong Akpan on behalf of the former governor.
El-Rufai’s lawyers said several statements made during a television programme aired on September 3 were considered defamatory and concerned issues including banditry, killings, demolitions, ransom payments and the former governor’s actions while he was in office in Kaduna State.
The legal team said the broadcast was still available to the public through terrestrial and satellite television as well as online streaming platforms.
According to the lawyers, the continued availability of the programme could further expose El-Rufai to reputational damage, prompting the demand for the immediate preservation of relevant materials relating to the interview.

The letter gave Musa and his representatives 24 hours to acknowledge receipt of the legal demand.
The defence minister was also given seven days to submit a substantive written response to the issues raised by El-Rufai’s lawyers.
The former governor’s legal team warned that failure to resolve the matter within the stipulated period could lead to further legal steps.
El-Rufai, according to the letter, has reserved the right to pursue all remedies available under the law if the demands for retraction and apology are not met.
