Two candidates in Saturday’s Osun State governorship election have withdrawn from the race and declared their support for the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke.

The candidates are Adebayo Simon Adewale of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Adedamola Adebayo, popularly known as Fryo, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Adewale announced his withdrawal during a press conference in Osogbo on Thursday, saying the decision followed consultations with party leaders, supporters and other stakeholders.

The APM candidate said he decided to step down after considering the political situation in the state and placing the interests of Osun above his personal ambition.
He said his assessment had convinced him that Adeleke should be allowed to continue in office and consolidate what his administration had achieved.
Adewale subsequently asked his supporters and members of the APM to support Adeleke in Saturday’s election.

He said his decision was intended to contribute to peace, stability and development in Osun State, adding that political leaders should put the interests of the people ahead of their individual ambitions.
The PDP candidate, Adedamola Adebayo, also announced his withdrawal from the contest in a separate press briefing in Osogbo.
Adebayo, popularly known as Fryo, declared his support for Adeleke and called on PDP members, supporters and other party structures to back the incumbent governor.
He urged members of the party to support Adeleke’s bid to remain in office until 2030.
The two withdrawals occurred less than two days before the August 15 governorship election, potentially reshaping the contest as the remaining candidates intensify their campaigns.
Adeleke is contesting on the platform of the Accord Party, while Bola Oyebamiji is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Najeem Salaam is representing the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The development comes amid heightened political activity in Osun as the major contenders make their final efforts to mobilise voters ahead of Saturday’s poll.
